About TOSS – your TUW search

As a TU Wien student you have to juggle with many websites:

• TISS for official information
• TUWEL for e-learning courses
• homepages of courses
• OpenCast for lecture recordings
• VorlesungsWiki for information from your fellow students
• a chat platform for communication with your fellow students (e.g. mattermost.fsinf.at)

TOSS makes all of the above quickly accessible for every course. You can additionally search for lecturers, curricula, rooms and passages of fsinf.at/basics.

TOSS was originally developed by Gittenburg and is hosted by the Fachschaft Informatik.

Tips

• Select results with Tab and open links per single-key shortcut. Hold Shift while pressing a link key, to open the link in a new tab.

• Search TOSS from your address bar. In Firefox you need to add the search engine manually, in Chromium it is added automatically.

• You can search for course abbreviations, if they are set in the VorlesungsWiki.

• You can add and edit rooms at https://wiki.fsinf.at/wiki/Rooms.

Ethics

• TOSS is non-commercial and does not track you (except for a regular web server log). For details refer to https://www.fsinf.at/datenschutz.

• While TOSS does not respect robots.txt, it identifies itself via the User-Agent header and only crawls at a conservative interval.

Advantages over the TISS course search

• You can go back (TISS annoyingly disables the cache).
• Fuzzy search – you can misspell and still get reasonable results.
• The search works even if your query includes special characters.
• Linkable – toss results to your friends.
• Autocompletion – get results as you type.
• Works without JavaScript.
